ZEC Wallet Guide Best ZEC wallets

The best Zcash (ZEC) wallets in 2026

For most people the best ZEC wallet in October 2026 is a shielded, Ironwood-ready mobile wallet: Zodl (formerly Zashi) is the simplest, Zingo! and Zkool suit more technical users, and Edge, Unstoppable and Cake Wallet are good multi-coin options. For larger sums, pair Zodl with a Keystone 3 Pro or use a Ledger with Ledger Wallet Desktop, and avoid the retired YWallet and transparent-only wallets if you want privacy.

A "ZEC wallet" is any app or device that holds the keys to your Zcash. In 2026 that word hides a big difference. Some wallets use Zcash's private shielded pools, which hide the sender, receiver and amount. Others only use transparent addresses, which work like Bitcoin and show everything on a public ledger. And since 28 July 2026, a wallet also has to support the new Ironwood pool to receive new shielded funds at all.

Most "best Zcash wallet" lists you will find were written before these changes. Some still recommend YWallet, call Zodl by its old name Zashi, or tell you that no hardware wallet supports shielded ZEC. All three are now wrong. This page reflects the situation on 24 October 2026.

What changed in 2026, in one minute

  • Orchard flaw. A bug in the Orchard shielded pool's circuit was found on 29 May 2026. Orchard was halted by an emergency soft fork on 2 June and fixed by the NU6.2 hard fork on 3 June. No exploitation was found (Decrypt, June 2026). See the Orchard vulnerability explained.
  • Ironwood is live. The NU6.3 upgrade activated the new Ironwood shielded pool on 28 July 2026 at block 3,428,143. Orchard is now withdraw-only: funds leave it through a public "turnstile" (The Block, 28 Jul 2026). Your unified address (u1...) does not change. See what Ironwood is.
  • Zashi is now Zodl. The team that built Zashi left the Electric Coin Company on 7 January 2026 and set up a new company, Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL). On 16 February 2026 it announced that Zashi would become Zodl through a normal app update (Forklog, 17 Feb 2026).
  • YWallet is retired. ZecHub lists it as deprecated; its developer's new wallet is Zkool.
  • zcashd reached end of support on 18 July 2026, before Ironwood. Full-node users move to the Zebra node plus the Zallet wallet, which is in beta.
  • Hardware support arrived. Keystone works with shielded ZEC through Zodl, and Ledger added native shielded ZEC to Ledger Wallet Desktop on 23 September 2026. Trezor is still transparent-only.

Quick picks

  • Best overall: Zodl. Shielded by default, simple, built by long-time Zcash developers, with swaps and Keystone support.
  • Best for privacy tinkerers and desktop: Zkool. Multi-account, Tor and Nym transport, FROST multisig, imports YWallet and zcashd keys.
  • Best lightweight shielded wallet: Zingo!. Fast "spend before sync finishes" engine, memo messaging, TEX address support.
  • Best multi-coin wallets with shielded ZEC: Edge, Unstoppable and Cake Wallet.
  • Best hardware setups: Keystone 3 Pro with Zodl (mobile, air-gapped) or Ledger with Ledger Wallet Desktop.
  • For node operators and exchanges: Zallet with Zebra (beta).

How we judged them

We do not take payments or use affiliate links, so nothing here is ranked for commission. We weighted these points, in order:

  1. Shielded by default and Ironwood-ready. Privacy is the reason Zcash exists. A wallet that cannot receive into Ironwood cannot receive new shielded funds today.
  2. Self-custody. You hold the recovery phrase; nobody can freeze your funds.
  3. Open source. Public code lets independent people check what the app does.
  4. Track record and maintenance. Did the team ship Ironwood support on time? Wallets that were ready on 28 July 2026 scored higher.
  5. Ease of use. Clear backups, automatic shielding, sensible fees (Zcash's standard fee is 0.0001 ZEC for a simple payment, see fees).

Best mobile wallets

Zodl: best for most people

Zodl is the renamed Zashi. It keeps funds shielded, offers 1-click shielding when transparent ZEC arrives (for example from an exchange), and has built-in swaps through NEAR Intents. Version 3.8.0 enabled Ironwood on launch day and version 3.9.0 (7 August 2026) added a guided, gradual migration out of Orchard with optional Tor. It is mobile only. Full review: Zodl.

Zingo!: best lightweight alternative

Built by Zingo Labs, Zingo! focuses on shielded payments and memo messaging. Its pepper-sync engine lets you spend before a sync finishes, and it understands TEX addresses, which some exchanges require. Full review: Zingo!.

Edge, Unstoppable and Cake: best if you hold other coins

All three support shielded ZEC and are listed as Ironwood-ready. Edge has offered shielded ZEC since January 2022. Unstoppable is open source and verified as such by WalletScrutiny. Cake Wallet added Zcash in January 2026, sends incoming transparent funds straight into Ironwood, and migrated Orchard balances automatically. See our Android and iPhone guides.

Best desktop wallets

Desktop is the weakest category in 2026. Zkool is the strongest light desktop wallet, with documented Linux builds. Ledger owners get shielded ZEC in Ledger Wallet Desktop. Power users can run zingo-cli or Zallet with a Zebra node. Brave Wallet's shielded support is not yet Ironwood-ready. Details: best Zcash desktop wallet.

Best hardware wallets

Two hardware options support shielded ZEC in the Ironwood pool:

  • Keystone 3 Pro with its "Cypherpunk" firmware, paired with Zodl. It is air-gapped and signs by QR code.
  • Ledger, through Ledger Wallet Desktop since 23 September 2026, or through the Zondax "Zcash Shielded" app with companion wallets such as Zkool.

Trezor supports only transparent addresses. KeepKey has Ironwood code merged in development but we could not confirm a stable release. More in Zcash hardware wallets and Ledger vs Keystone.

Wallets to avoid or move away from

  • YWallet: retired and not Ironwood-ready. Restore your seed in Zkool. See YWallet to Zkool.
  • Nighthawk: ended support for sending ZEC on 29 September 2025. Restore your seed in another Zcash wallet.
  • zcashd: end of support on 18 July 2026 and no Ironwood. Use Zebra plus Zallet.
  • Zecwallet Lite: unmaintained since 2022. The Argos tool from the nonprofit Sovright (30 June 2026) can recover stuck funds with the original seed.
  • Transparent-only wallets (Exodus, Trust Wallet, Coinomi, SafePal, Trezor and others): fine for holding, but every transaction is public. See transparent-only wallets.
  • Any "Zcash web wallet" website that asks for your recovery phrase. No mainstream, Ironwood-ready web wallet exists. See Zcash web wallet.

If you still have funds in Orchard

About 88% of the Orchard balance had moved to Ironwood by 10 September 2026 (KuCoin, Sep 2026). If yours has not, open an Ironwood-ready wallet that holds the same seed: Zodl, Zingo!, Zkool, Edge, Unstoppable or Cake. Amounts that pass through the turnstile are visible on-chain, so wallets such as Zodl split the move into smaller steps. Our Orchard to Ironwood guide walks through it.

Why shielded support matters more than features

On a transparent address, anyone who learns it can see your balance and every payment you make or receive, forever. If you once withdrew from an exchange that verified your identity, that address is linked to your name. A shielded wallet keeps the sender, receiver, amount and memo encrypted on-chain, so the public ledger shows only that a shielded transaction happened.

That is why we rank a simple shielded wallet above a feature-rich transparent one. Shielding is also cheap: the standard ZIP-317 fee is 5,000 zatoshi per logical action, so a typical shielded payment costs 0.0001 ZEC. Learn the difference in shielded vs transparent and how one address can cover both in unified addresses.

What a light wallet's server can see

Every mobile Zcash wallet is a "light" wallet. It downloads compact blocks from a server (lightwalletd, or its newer replacement Zaino) and checks each output on your device with your own keys. The server never gets your keys or learns which payments are yours.

It does see your IP address and when you sync and broadcast transactions. During the Orchard-to-Ironwood migration that matters more than usual, because amounts crossing the turnstile are public. Zodl offers Tor, and Zkool offers Tor and Nym, to hide your IP address. Zingo! lets you choose your own server. A full-node wallet such as Zallet avoids third-party servers entirely, at the cost of running a node.

Self-custody vs exchange accounts

Every wallet recommended here is self-custodial: you hold the recovery phrase, and nobody can freeze or lose your coins for you. Keeping ZEC on an exchange is different. The exchange holds the keys, may restrict ZEC in your region, and often only withdraws to transparent addresses. If your exchange has limited ZEC, see what to do if your exchange delists Zcash. To buy ZEC and move it into one of these wallets, start with how to buy Zcash.

Safety basics for any ZEC wallet

  • Download only from the developer's own site or the official app store listing, and check the developer name. Type the address yourself or use a bookmark.
  • Write down the recovery phrase and, for Zodl, the birthday height, on paper, offline. See restoring a Zcash wallet.
  • Never type a recovery phrase into a website. A phishing site called "Zcash Web Wallet | Zodl" (myzodl.com) asked for seeds in August 2026; the real Zodl has no web version.
  • A viewing key gives permanent read access and cannot be revoked. Share it only on purpose. See viewing keys.
  • NU7 is planned for around 5 November 2026 (block 3,543,405; a delay is possible). It cuts block time from 75 to 25 seconds and is expected to have little effect on wallets, but keep your app updated.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best ZEC wallet in 2026?

For most people, Zodl (formerly Zashi) on iOS or Android. It is shielded by default, Ironwood-ready and open source. Zingo! and Zkool are strong alternatives, and Edge, Unstoppable and Cake Wallet suit people who hold several coins.

Which Zcash wallets support Ironwood?

As of October 2026 ZecHub lists Zodl, Zingo!, Zkool, Edge, Unstoppable, Cake Wallet, Keystone, Ledger and Zallet (beta) among the Ironwood-ready wallets. Trezor, Exodus, Trust Wallet, the MetaMask Snap and YWallet are not.

Is Zashi still available?

Zashi has been renamed Zodl; the change was announced on 16 February 2026. Existing users received the new name through a normal app update and did not need a new download or a new recovery phrase.

Can I keep ZEC on an exchange instead?

You can, but the exchange holds the keys and many exchanges only withdraw to transparent addresses. Coinbase, for example, does not send to shielded addresses. For privacy and control, withdraw to a shielded wallet.

Do I need a hardware wallet for Zcash?

Not for small amounts. For larger holdings a Keystone 3 Pro with Zodl, or a Ledger with Ledger Wallet Desktop, keeps your keys off your phone or computer and supports shielded ZEC.
