Edge Wallet for Zcash: review
Edge is a self-custodial multi-coin mobile wallet that has supported shielded ZEC since January 2022 and is listed as Ironwood-ready. Instead of starting with a seed phrase, you log in with a username and password and Edge keeps an encrypted backup on its servers. It suits people who want shielded ZEC alongside other coins in a beginner-friendly app.
Edge was one of the first multi-coin wallets to add shielded Zcash, in January 2022. It remains one of only a handful of multi-coin apps where ZEC is private by default rather than transparent.

How Edge accounts work
Edge is unusual. You create a username and password, and the app derives encryption keys on your phone. Your wallet data is encrypted on the device before it is backed up to Edge's servers, and Edge says it does not hold the password needed to decrypt it. Logging in on a new phone restores your wallets.
That makes Edge self-custodial but different from seed-only wallets. The upside: easy recovery and no 24 words to lose. The downside: your security depends heavily on a strong, unique password, and an encrypted copy of your keys sits on a company's servers. Password recovery must be set up in advance and uses recovery questions plus a saved link. If the app lets you view the seed or private key of your ZEC wallet, write it down too, so you are not dependent on Edge's servers alone.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Shielded ZEC since 2022; Ironwood-ready | Mobile only |
| Many other coins in the same app | Core library not under a standard open-source licence |
| Easy username and password recovery | Encrypted key backups stored on Edge servers |
| In-app swaps | No hardware wallet support |
| Beginner-friendly | Fewer Zcash-specific features than Zodl or Zingo! |
Who Edge suits
Edge is a good choice if you hold Bitcoin, Ethereum or other coins and want shielded ZEC in the same app, and you prefer a familiar login to managing a seed phrase. If Zcash is your main coin, a Zcash-only wallet such as Zodl or Zingo! offers more privacy features. Other multi-coin options with shielded ZEC are Unstoppable and Cake Wallet.
Swaps and privacy
Edge offers in-app swaps through third-party providers; we did not verify which providers handle ZEC. A swap provider sees the addresses and amounts you swap. If privacy matters, swap into a shielded address and check that the provider supports it. Swaps may be unavailable in some countries; follow local rules (see is Zcash legal).
Orchard funds in Edge
If your Edge ZEC wallet held funds in Orchard before 28 July 2026, update the app and check that the balance has moved to Ironwood. If anything looks stuck, our migration guide explains the turnstile. Your receiving address does not change.
Getting started with Edge for ZEC
- Install Edge from the official store listing and create an account with a long, unique password.
- Set up password recovery immediately.
- Add a Zcash wallet inside the app.
- Receive a small test amount to your shielded address.
- If you withdraw from an exchange that only sends to transparent addresses, check that Edge has shielded the funds before relying on their privacy.
Things to check before relying on Edge
- Your password strength. Because an encrypted backup sits on Edge's servers, a weak password is the main risk. Use a long passphrase you do not use anywhere else.
- Recovery set-up. Without recovery questions and the saved link, a forgotten password can mean lost access.
- Shielded receiving. Confirm you are sharing the shielded or unified address, not a transparent one, when privacy matters.
- App updates. Keep Edge updated so it follows network upgrades such as NU7, planned for around 5 November 2026.
Verdict
Edge is a long-standing, Ironwood-ready multi-coin wallet with genuinely shielded ZEC. Its username-and-password model is friendly but asks you to trust Edge's encryption and servers for backups, and its core is not fully open source. Pick it for convenience across many coins; pick Zodl or Unstoppable if open code and seed-only custody matter more.
Safety notes
- The official site is edge.app. Type it yourself and follow its store links, or check the developer name in the App Store or Google Play.
- Use a long, unique password and set up password recovery right away.
- If the app shows your ZEC wallet's seed or private key, record it on paper as a second backup.
- Edge staff will never ask for your password or keys.
