How to buy Zcash (ZEC) in 2026
Set up a shielded, Ironwood-ready wallet first, then buy ZEC on a regulated exchange that serves your country, such as Coinbase, Kraken or Binance where available, and withdraw it to your own wallet. You can also swap other coins into shielded ZEC inside wallets like Zodl or Cake Wallet.
Quick steps
- Set up a shielded wallet. Install an Ironwood-ready wallet such as Zodl, Zingo!, Cake Wallet or Zkool and write the recovery phrase and birthday height on paper.
- Check your country. Confirm that a regulated exchange offers ZEC where you live, using the country checker or country pages.
- Open and verify an exchange account. Sign up with an exchange that serves your country and complete its identity checks.
- Buy ZEC. Add funds and place a market or limit order for ZEC, checking the fee before you confirm.
- Withdraw a test amount. Send a small amount to your wallet's address; use the transparent address if the exchange does not support shielded withdrawals.
- Shield and move the rest. Shield the received funds in your wallet, then withdraw the remaining balance the same way.
Buying Zcash is like buying any other coin, with one extra decision: where the ZEC ends up. Most exchanges only send to transparent addresses, which are public like Bitcoin's. To get the privacy Zcash is known for, you move the coins into a shielded wallet afterwards. This guide covers both parts, as of October 2026.
Before you start
- Check that exchanges serve your country. Owning ZEC is legal almost everywhere we track, but licensed exchanges cannot offer it in places such as South Korea, Japan, India, the UAE, the Philippines and Thailand. Use our country checker or the country pages.
- Expect identity checks. Regulated exchanges must verify who you are. That is a legal requirement, not a Zcash quirk.
- Know the price is volatile. ZEC peaked near 1,700 US dollars in early October 2026 and was around 1,220 dollars by 23 October (The Crypto Times, 23 Oct 2026). See the live ZEC price.
Step 1: set up a wallet you control
Do this first, so you have somewhere to send the coins. Pick a wallet that is shielded by default and supports Ironwood, the shielded pool that replaced Orchard on 28 July 2026. Good starting points are Zodl (formerly Zashi), Zingo!, Cake Wallet and Zkool. Write down the recovery phrase and the birthday height on paper. Our wallet setup guide walks through it.
Avoid YWallet, which dropped Zcash support after Ironwood, and note that Trezor, Exodus and Trust Wallet hold transparent ZEC only.
Step 2: choose where to buy
| Route | Examples | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regulated exchange | Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini (US), Binance, OKX, CoinSpot (Australia), SwissBorg (Europe) | Buying with bank card or transfer | Regional restrictions; most withdraw to transparent addresses only |
| Swap inside a wallet | NEAR Intents swaps in Zodl and Cake Wallet | Turning BTC, ETH or stablecoins into shielded ZEC | You need another coin first; swap fees and spreads |
| Web swap aggregator | LeoDex, ShapeShift | Swapping into a shielded address you own | LeoDex charges 0.45%; check the address before confirming |
| Fund or ETF | Grayscale Zcash ETF (ZCSH), NYSE Arca since 25 August 2026 | Price exposure in a brokerage account | You do not hold ZEC; 2.5% annual fee |
Exchange availability changes often. Our where to buy Zcash page has a region-by-region status table, and the delisting tracker logs recent changes.
Step 3: buy ZEC
Open an account, finish verification, add funds and place an order for ZEC. A market order fills straight away at the current price; a limit order waits for the price you set. Check the fee on the confirmation screen, because instant-buy buttons usually cost more than the exchange's trading screen.
Step 4: withdraw to your wallet
This is where Zcash differs from most coins:
- Coinbase sends ZEC to transparent addresses only. Its page says sending to shielded addresses is not supported. Use the transparent receive address your wallet shows, then shield the coins.
- Gemini has supported shielded withdrawals since 2020 and unified addresses since August 2025. It routed these to Orchard from November 2025; how it behaves after Ironwood is unverified, so test with a small amount.
- Other exchanges usually withdraw to transparent addresses. If yours accepts a unified (u1) address, test it with a small amount first.
Zodl shields incoming transparent funds with one tap and Cake Wallet does it automatically. Our shielding guide explains the details, including fees and timing.
Step 5: test, then move the rest
Send a small amount first and wait for it to arrive. A Zcash block arrives about every 75 seconds until NU7 (planned around 5 November 2026), then about every 25 seconds, but exchanges set their own confirmation requirements. Once the test works, withdraw the rest. Check the first and last characters of the address every time; clipboard malware can swap them.
What it costs
You pay the exchange's trading fee or spread, its withdrawal fee, and then a small network fee when you shield. Zcash's standard fee is 5,000 zatoshi per logical action with a minimum of two, so a simple shielded payment costs 0.0001 ZEC. Shielding many small transparent deposits costs a little more. Try the fee calculator.
A note for EU readers
From 10 July 2027 the EU's AML Regulation bars crypto firms from keeping accounts that allow anonymity-enhancing coins. It names no coins, and it is untested whether ZEC, whose privacy is optional, will be caught. Exchanges may restrict ZEC before then. Read what the 2027 rule means.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy shielded ZEC directly?
Rarely. Most exchanges withdraw to transparent addresses, so you shield the coins in your wallet afterwards. Gemini supports unified-address withdrawals, and in-wallet swaps in Zodl or Cake Wallet can deliver to a shielded address.
Which wallet should I send my ZEC to?
A shielded, Ironwood-ready wallet you control, such as Zodl, Zingo!, Cake Wallet or Zkool. Avoid YWallet, which dropped Zcash after the Ironwood upgrade.
Is buying a Zcash ETF the same as owning ZEC?
No. Grayscale's ZCSH gives price exposure in a brokerage account, but you do not hold ZEC, cannot use shielded payments and pay a 2.5% annual fee.
Why does my exchange only show a transparent address option?
Many exchanges, including Coinbase, support only transparent ZEC withdrawals. Withdraw to your wallet's transparent address and then shield the funds.
