How to sell Zcash (ZEC)

To sell ZEC for cash, send it from your wallet to a regulated exchange that lists ZEC in your country, sell it for your currency and withdraw to your bank. To switch into another coin instead, use a swap inside a wallet such as Zodl or Cake Wallet. Keep records, because selling is usually a taxable event.

Quick steps

  1. Confirm the exchange lists ZEC. Check that a regulated exchange still offers ZEC in your country.
  2. Copy the deposit address. Get the ZEC deposit address from the exchange and note whether it is transparent (t1) or TEX (tex1).
  3. Send a test amount. Send a small amount from your wallet and wait until the exchange credits it.
  4. Send the rest and sell. Deposit the remaining ZEC and sell it, ideally with a limit order.
  5. Withdraw and keep records. Withdraw your currency to your bank and record the date, amount, price and fees for tax.

Selling Zcash is mostly the reverse of buying it, with one twist: your coins are probably in a shielded wallet, while exchanges usually expect transparent deposits. This guide covers the routes that work in October 2026.

Selling on an exchange

  1. Check the exchange still lists ZEC where you live. Regional restrictions change; see where to buy Zcash.
  2. Get your ZEC deposit address from the exchange. It will usually be a transparent address (t1...) or, on Binance, a TEX address (tex1...).
  3. Send a small test amount from your wallet and wait for it to be credited. Exchanges set their own confirmation counts; a Zcash block arrives about every 75 seconds until NU7 (planned around 5 November 2026), then about every 25 seconds.
  4. Send the rest, then sell on the exchange's trading screen. A limit order often costs less than an instant-sell button.
  5. Withdraw your currency to your bank.

Sending from a shielded wallet to an exchange

Your wallet can pay a transparent address from shielded funds; the payment simply leaves the shielded pool, so the amount and the exchange's address become public. Coinbase says it accepts deposits from shielded addresses.

TEX addresses are different. A tex1 address tells wallets the exchange will only accept funds that came from a transparent address. A shielded wallet that supports TEX, such as Zingo!, handles this by first moving the amount to a one-time transparent address and then paying the exchange, so it takes two transactions and two fees. If your wallet does not recognise a tex1 address, do not try to work around it; use a wallet that supports TEX or ask the exchange. Paste any address into our address validator to see which type it is.

Swapping ZEC for another coin

Zodl and Cake Wallet offer swaps through NEAR Intents, a cross-chain swap protocol, so you can turn ZEC into another coin without an exchange account. LeoDex (fee 0.45%) and ShapeShift do similar swaps on the web. Compare the quoted amount you will receive, not just the stated fee, because spreads vary. Double-check the destination address for the coin you receive.

Before you sell: Ironwood and old funds

If some of your ZEC is still in the old Orchard pool, it can still be spent, but only by passing through the public Ironwood turnstile, which reveals the amount. Sending to an exchange from Orchard works the same way. If you want privacy for the rest of your balance, migrate first; see Orchard to Ironwood. If your coins are in YWallet, which dropped Zcash after Ironwood, restore the seed in Zkool first (how).

Sell or swap?

If you want money in a bank account, a regulated exchange is the normal route, and it is the one tax authorities find easiest to follow. If you only want to change which coin you hold, an in-wallet swap is quicker and avoids opening an account, but you should still compare the quote with an exchange price. For large amounts, split the sale into a few transactions and confirm each one arrives, rather than sending everything at once.

Taxes and records

In most countries, selling or swapping ZEC is a taxable disposal, and paying with it may be too. Record the date, amount, price and fees for every sale and swap. Shielded transactions do not show up on public explorers, so your own records matter. Some wallets let you export a viewing key or transaction history for an accountant; share a viewing key only if you are comfortable giving permanent read access. See Zcash taxes.

Safety tips

  • Never send ZEC to someone offering to buy it at a premium through social media or a memo message; that is a common scam pattern. See Zcash scams.
  • Type exchange web addresses yourself or use a bookmark.
  • Check the first and last characters of every deposit address after pasting it.
  • If your exchange announces a ZEC delisting, read what to do and act before the withdrawal deadline.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send shielded ZEC directly to an exchange?

Usually yes: your wallet pays the exchange's transparent address from shielded funds, and the amount becomes public as it leaves the pool. Exchanges using TEX addresses need a wallet that supports TEX, which sends in two steps.

What is a TEX address?

A tex1 address is a transparent address in a special encoding that tells wallets to pay it only from transparent funds. It was created for Binance's deposit rules under ZIP 320.

Can I sell ZEC without an exchange?

You can swap ZEC for another coin inside Zodl or Cake Wallet via NEAR Intents, or on LeoDex or ShapeShift. Turning it into bank money normally still needs a regulated exchange.

Do I pay tax when I sell Zcash?

In most countries, yes. Selling or swapping ZEC is usually a taxable disposal, so keep records of every transaction.
