Zcash taxes: how ZEC is taxed
In most countries ZEC is taxed like other cryptocurrencies: selling it, swapping it or spending it can trigger tax on any gain, and mining income is usually taxed when received. Shielding your ZEC does not change what you owe. Keep records of every purchase and disposal; a viewing key can help you share them with an accountant.
Privacy is not tax exemption. Tax authorities treat Zcash the same way they treat Bitcoin, and moving coins into a shielded pool does not change whether a gain is taxable. What Zcash does give you is a tidy way to share records with your accountant without exposing them to the world. This page covers the general principles and a summary of rates in major countries. It is not tax advice; rules vary and change often, so check with a qualified adviser or your tax authority.
What is usually taxable
| Action | Usually taxable? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Buying ZEC with fiat | No | Record the date, amount and price: this is your cost basis. |
| Moving ZEC between your own wallets | No | Includes shielding, deshielding and Orchard-to-Ironwood migration. Network fees may affect cost basis in some countries. |
| Selling ZEC for fiat | Yes | Gain or loss = sale price minus cost basis. |
| Swapping ZEC for another crypto | Often | Taxable in many countries (for example the US and UK); not in some (France treats crypto-to-crypto swaps as non-taxable). |
| Paying for goods with ZEC | Often | Treated as a disposal in many countries. |
| Mining rewards | Yes | Usually income when received; later sale may also trigger a gain. |
| Receiving ZEC as payment for work | Yes | Income at its value when received. |
| Gifts | Depends | Rules on gifts differ widely. |

Shielded ZEC and your tax return
Shielded transactions are hidden from the public, not from your obligations. You still owe tax on gains, and you are still expected to report them. Tax authorities also have other sources: exchanges collect identity documents and, in a growing number of countries, report customer transactions to tax authorities. In the EU, the DAC8 directive requires crypto-asset service providers to report customer transactions from 1 January 2026. In the US, brokers began reporting gross proceeds of digital asset sales on Form 1099-DA for 2025 transactions. Many other countries are adopting the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework.
So the realistic picture is: the exchange where you bought and the exchange where you sell may both report, and the gap in between is your responsibility to document.
Keeping good records
- Save exchange statements for every purchase and sale, including fees. Download them regularly: if an exchange delists ZEC or closes your account, access may end.
- Keep a simple log of wallet transactions: date, amount, what it was for and the ZEC price at the time. Our price converter helps with current values.
- Export from your wallet if it supports transaction export. If not, your log is the record.
- Use a viewing key for your accountant if they need to verify shielded activity. Consider a separate account just for the activity they need. Read viewing keys first: they cannot be revoked.
- Note internal transfers, such as shielding or Ironwood migration, so they are not mistaken for sales.
Mining
Miners receive 80% of the block reward, 1.25 ZEC per block plus fees until NU7, after which per-block amounts shrink in line with 25-second blocks. In most countries the value of mined ZEC is taxable income when received, and electricity and equipment costs may be deductible if mining is a business. Selling mined ZEC later can create a further gain or loss. See the mining calculator and Zcash supply.
Special cases from 2026
- Orchard-to-Ironwood migration moves coins between your own pools. It is generally not a disposal, but the fees are real; keep the transaction records.
- Exchange delistings in India (Kraken, May 2026) and the UAE (Kraken, September 2026) ended with leftover balances liquidated. A forced sale is usually still a disposal for tax.
- ETF holders. Shares of Grayscale's Zcash ETF (ZCSH), trading since 25 August 2026, are taxed like other securities in your account, not like ZEC held in a wallet.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay tax on Zcash if it is shielded?
Yes. Shielding hides transactions from the public but does not change tax law. Gains on selling, swapping or spending ZEC are taxable in most countries whether or not the coins were shielded.
Is shielding ZEC a taxable event?
Generally no, because you are moving coins between your own addresses. Keep a record so the transfer is not mistaken for a sale.
How do I show my accountant shielded transactions?
Keep your own log and exchange statements, and if needed share a viewing key, ideally for a separate account that holds only the relevant activity.
Is mining Zcash taxed?
In most countries mined ZEC is taxed as income at its value when received, and a later sale can create a capital gain or loss.
