Trezor and Zcash: transparent only

Trezor hardware wallets (Safe 3, Safe 5 and Safe 7) support only transparent Zcash addresses in October 2026, so your balance and transactions are public. A grant to add shielded support was revived in November 2025, but nothing has shipped. Trezor is fine for storing transparent ZEC; for private ZEC on hardware, use Keystone with Zodl or a Ledger.

Trezor is a respected, open-source hardware wallet brand, and it supports Zcash. But Trezor's own Zcash page is clear: its devices "only support public transactions using t-addresses". Shielded transactions are not compatible.

What "transparent only" means

A transparent Zcash address (starting t1 or t3) works like a Bitcoin address. Anyone can see its balance, every payment in and out, and the amounts. If you have ever withdrawn from an exchange to that address, the exchange knows it is yours. You get none of the privacy that makes Zcash different. See shielded vs transparent.

Also, many shielded wallets give out unified addresses (u1...). A transparent-only wallet may not be able to pay one directly. Check the address type with our address validator.

Will Trezor add shielded ZEC?

In November 2025, Trezor said it would resume a pending grant to add Orchard support (ZecHub, Nov 2025). Since then Orchard has been closed to new funds and replaced by Ironwood (28 July 2026), so any future support would need to target Ironwood. As of October 2026 we found no shipped shielded support. We will update this page if that changes.

Pros and cons for Zcash

ProsCons
Open-source, well-established hardwareNo shielded ZEC at all
Keys stay offlineAll balances and transactions public
Trezor Suite on desktop, web and mobileMay not pay unified (u1) addresses
Works with ExodusNo Ironwood roadmap date

Who Trezor suits for ZEC

A Trezor is reasonable if you already own one, just want to hold ZEC as an investment, and do not need privacy. If privacy matters, use a shielded wallet. You can keep the Trezor for other coins.

How to move Trezor ZEC into a shielded wallet

  1. Set up a shielded, Ironwood-ready wallet such as Zodl, or a shielded hardware setup (Keystone or Ledger).
  2. Copy that wallet's transparent receiving address if Trezor Suite cannot send to its unified address.
  3. Send a small test amount from Trezor Suite, then the rest.
  4. Shield the funds in the new wallet (Zodl offers 1-click shielding). See how to shield ZEC.

Moving from transparent to shielded is itself visible on-chain: observers can see the amount enter the shielded pool, but not what happens after.

Shielded alternatives to Trezor

Keystone 3 Pro + ZodlYes, IronwoodPhone (iOS, Android)
Ledger + Ledger Wallet DesktopYes, IronwoodComputer
Zodl (software)Yes, IronwoodPhone

See all Zcash hardware wallets for details.

Trezor with Exodus

Trezor's Zcash page lists Exodus as a compatible app. That does not add privacy: Exodus is also transparent-only for ZEC. The combination gives you a different interface, not shielded transactions. See transparent-only wallets.

Verdict

Trezor is a good hardware wallet, but not for private Zcash. Use it for transparent ZEC only if you accept that everything is public. For shielded ZEC on hardware, Keystone and Ledger are the options in October 2026.

Safety notes

  • The official site is trezor.io; type it yourself. Trezor Suite should come from there.
  • Trezor will never ask for your recovery phrase. Fake "Trezor Suite" apps and emails asking you to "verify" your seed are common.
  • Buy devices new from Trezor or an authorised reseller.

Frequently asked questions

Does Trezor support Zcash?

Yes, but only transparent Zcash addresses. Shielded transactions are not supported on Trezor devices as of October 2026.

Can Trezor send to a shielded or unified address?

Trezor's own page says shielded z-address transactions are not compatible. If it cannot pay a unified address, send to the receiving wallet's transparent address and shield there.

Is Trezor adding Ironwood support?

A grant to add shielded (Orchard) support was revived in November 2025, but no shielded support had shipped by October 2026, and ZecHub lists Trezor as not Ironwood-ready.

What hardware wallet should I use for shielded ZEC?

A Keystone 3 Pro with Zodl, or a Ledger with Ledger Wallet Desktop.
