Ledger for Zcash: shielded ZEC review

Since 23 September 2026, Ledger Wallet Desktop supports shielded ZEC, including the Ironwood pool, alongside transparent ZEC, with keys kept on your Ledger device. Shielded support is desktop only (mobile is 'coming soon'), and Ledger's firmware is closed source. It is a good choice if you already own a Ledger or mainly use a computer.

For years Ledger was a transparent-only option for Zcash, and many guides still say so. That changed in stages through 2025 and 2026, ending with native shielded ZEC in Ledger's own desktop app.

How Ledger's Zcash support evolved

  • Until August 2025: transparent addresses only. In August 2025 Ledger added de-shielding.
  • Zondax "Zcash Shielded" app: a separate Ledger app that lets companion wallets such as Zkool and Vizor sign shielded transactions.
  • November 2025: some holders of ZEC from before 2018 reported problems moving it from Ledger as the price rallied (The Defiant, Nov 2025).
  • 23 September 2026: native shielded ZEC, including Ironwood, in Ledger Wallet Desktop (Ledger, 23 Sep 2026).

How shielded ZEC works on Ledger

Shielded and transparent ZEC appear together in one account. Your computer does the heavy computation of building shielded transactions, and your Ledger shows what you are signing so you can approve it on the device. To find your incoming payments, Ledger Wallet keeps a viewing key on your computer and scans the chain locally.

You can also give an accountant or tax adviser read-only access to your history. Remember that a viewing key, once shared, cannot be revoked (viewing keys). Ledger notes that availability may vary by jurisdiction.

Pros and cons

Read-only access for accountantsSupported models not clearly listed; Nano X limits reported for the Zondax app

Who Ledger suits

Ledger is the right choice if you already own one, hold other coins on it, and mainly manage savings from a computer. If you mostly use a phone, or prefer open-source and air-gapped hardware, the Keystone 3 Pro with Zodl is the alternative. We compare the two in Ledger vs Keystone.

Moving transparent ZEC on Ledger into shielded

If you stored transparent ZEC on a Ledger before September 2026, update Ledger Wallet Desktop and the Zcash app on your device, then shield the funds within your account. Shielding costs the standard fee (5,000 zatoshi per logical action; see fees). Our shielding guide explains why it is worth doing.

Getting started with shielded ZEC on Ledger

  1. Update your Ledger's firmware and Ledger Wallet Desktop.
  2. Install the Zcash app on the device from within Ledger Wallet.
  3. Add a Zcash account. Let the desktop app scan the chain; the first scan can take a while.
  4. Receive a small test amount to your shielded address, then move the rest.
  5. Check every address and amount on the device screen before approving.

Verdict

Ledger finally offers first-party shielded ZEC with Ironwood, which makes it a solid choice for desktop users who want hardware security. The closed firmware, desktop-only support and unclear device list are real drawbacks. If you prefer open-source, air-gapped hardware on your phone, choose Keystone.

Safety notes

  • Buy only from Ledger directly or an authorised reseller. The official site is ledger.com; type it yourself.
  • Ledger will never ask for your 24-word recovery phrase, by email, phone or in an app. Fake "Ledger Live" or "Ledger Wallet" apps that ask for it are a common scam.
  • Always check the address and amount on the device screen before approving.
  • Keep the recovery phrase offline and separate from the device.
