ZEC Wallet Guide Best ZEC wallets

Best Zcash desktop wallet in 2026

Desktop is the thinnest category for shielded Zcash in October 2026. Zkool is the best light desktop wallet, with documented Linux builds; Ledger owners can use Ledger Wallet Desktop for shielded ZEC; and node operators should move from zcashd to Zebra plus Zallet (beta). Exodus works on every desktop but only for transparent ZEC.

For years desktop users had Zecwallet Lite, YWallet and the zcashd node. In 2026 all three are gone or going: Zecwallet Lite has been unmaintained since 2022, YWallet is retired, and zcashd reached end of support on 18 July 2026 without support for the new Ironwood pool. What remains is smaller but workable.

Zkool: best light desktop wallet

Zkool is the successor to YWallet, by the same developer, and is MIT-licensed. Its README documents Linux installs as a Flatpak, AppImage or Deb package. The repository also contains Windows and macOS projects, but we could not find documented official downloads for them in October 2026, so check the project page (hhanh00.github.io/zkool2 or GitHub hhanh00/zkool2) before relying on them.

Strengths: multiple and hidden accounts, encrypted wallet database, FROST shielded multisig, per-account sync, and a choice of direct, Tor, Nym or proxy connections. It imports YWallet and zcashd keys and BIP44 seeds from Ledger and Exodus. Weaknesses: a plain interface and no automatic shielding of transparent funds. It can also act as a companion wallet for Ledger's Zondax "Zcash Shielded" app.

Ledger Wallet Desktop: best with hardware

On 23 September 2026 Ledger added native shielded ZEC, including Ironwood, to Ledger Wallet Desktop. Shielded and transparent ZEC sit in one account, the computer does the heavy computation, and the device shows what you are signing. You can share read-only access with an accountant. It is desktop only; mobile is "coming soon". Read the Ledger review.

For power users: zingo-cli and Zallet

zingo-cli is the command-line version of Zingo!, a light client that talks to a light-wallet server. It suits developers who want shielded ZEC in scripts without running a full node.

Zallet replaces the zcashd wallet. It runs alongside the Zebra node and offers a JSON-RPC interface. It is in beta: many zcashd RPC methods are not implemented yet, and its README warns that breaking changes may require recreating your wallet. See Zallet.

Brave Wallet

Brave added shielded ZEC on desktop in April 2025 (version 1.77). In October 2026 ZecHub listed its Ironwood support as "In Progress", so it cannot yet receive into the current shielded pool. Wait for an update before using it for private funds.

What about Exodus?

Exodus runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and is the wallet many search results push for "zcash wallet". It supports transparent ZEC only: your balance and every payment are public. It is fine for holding, not for privacy. See transparent-only wallets.

Legacy desktop wallets

  • YWallet desktop: retired. Import your seed into Zkool (guide).
  • zcashd: end of support 18 July 2026, no Ironwood. Move to Zebra plus Zallet.
  • Zecwallet Lite: unmaintained since 2022. Sovright's Argos recovery tool (30 June 2026) can recover funds with the original seed. In 2019 a fake Zecwallet "update" spread malware through a look-alike GitHub repo, so verify any download carefully.

Light wallet or full node?

A light wallet such as Zkool downloads compact blocks from a server and scans them on your computer. It starts in minutes and needs little disk space, but the server sees your IP address and sync times. A full node (Zebra plus Zallet) downloads and verifies the whole chain itself. That takes much more disk space, bandwidth and setup time, but no third party learns anything about your wallet activity.

For personal use, a light wallet with Tor or Nym is enough for most people. Full nodes make sense for businesses, developers, miners and anyone who already runs infrastructure.

Which desktop option should you choose?

  • You use Linux and want a normal app: Zkool.
  • You own a Ledger: Ledger Wallet Desktop, or Zkool as a companion via the Zondax app.
  • You use Cake on your phone: check whether Cake's desktop build offers ZEC on your system.
  • You are a developer: zingo-cli for a light client, Zallet for a full-node RPC wallet.
  • You are on Windows or macOS without a Ledger: honestly, a phone wallet (Zodl, Zingo!) is currently the smoother choice.

Desktop safety tips

  • A computer is exposed to more malware than a phone. For anything beyond pocket money, consider a hardware wallet.
  • Download from the official project page and check signatures or checksums where they are published.
  • Never paste a recovery phrase into a browser. No legitimate wallet "restores" in a web page.
  • Back up the recovery phrase on paper, not in a text file.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Zcash wallet for Windows?

Ledger Wallet Desktop supports shielded ZEC on Windows with a Ledger device. Exodus runs on Windows but is transparent-only. Zkool's code includes Windows support, but we could not confirm an official documented Windows download in October 2026.

What replaced zcashd?

The Zebra node plus the Zallet wallet, which is in beta. zcashd reached end of support on 18 July 2026 and does not support Ironwood.

Is Brave Wallet good for Zcash?

Brave supports shielded ZEC on desktop, but as of October 2026 its Ironwood support was still in progress, so it is not yet suitable for new shielded funds.

Can I still use YWallet on my computer?

No. YWallet is retired and not Ironwood-ready. Import your seed into Zkool, made by the same developer.
