Zcash vs Dash: privacy, speed and governance compared
Zcash hides sender, receiver and amount with zero-knowledge proofs, while Dash's long-standing privacy feature is optional CoinJoin mixing that leaves amounts visible. In July 2026 Dash also launched an optional Orchard-based shielded pool on its Evolution chain, built on Zcash technology, but Zcash remains the more established shielded network.
Dash (originally Darkcoin) and Zcash are often grouped together as privacy coins, and regulators frequently restrict them together. Technically they are very different. Dash was built for fast, cheap payments with a masternode network, and added privacy by mixing. Zcash was built around zero-knowledge privacy.
Zcash vs Dash at a glance
| Zcash (ZEC) | Dash (DASH) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main privacy feature | Shielded pool (zk-SNARKs); Ironwood since 28 Jul 2026 | CoinJoin mixing (formerly called PrivateSend), optional |
| What is hidden | Sender, receiver, amount and memo | CoinJoin obscures the link between inputs and outputs; amounts stay visible in fixed denominations |
| Newer option | Unified addresses, shielded by default in modern wallets | Orchard-based shielded pool on the Dash Evolution chain (launched Jul 2026) |
| Supply cap | 21 million | About 18.9 million |
| Block time | 75 seconds (25 seconds planned with NU7) | About 2.5 minutes, with InstantSend locks in seconds |
| Mining | Equihash (ASICs) | X11 (ASICs) plus masternodes (1,000 DASH collateral) |
| Funding and governance | 8% grants, 12% coinholder-controlled fund (until 2028) | Treasury from block rewards; masternodes vote on proposals |
| Exchange restrictions | Restricted in some countries; listed on Binance, Coinbase, Kraken (most regions) | Often restricted alongside ZEC and XMR (India, UAE, South Korea) |
How the privacy works
Dash CoinJoin
Dash's wallet splits your coins into standard denominations (0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 DASH) and mixes them with other users through masternodes. You choose how many rounds to run, from 2 to 16 (Dash documentation). Mixing makes it harder to link a payment to its source, but the amounts and addresses remain on the public chain, and the privacy depends on how many people mix at the same time. It is optional. Dash now calls the feature CoinJoin; it was previously marketed as PrivateSend.
Zcash shielded transactions
A shielded Zcash transaction reveals nothing on-chain about who paid whom or how much; a zero-knowledge proof shows only that the transaction is valid. The anonymity set is the whole shielded pool. About 4.89 million ZEC, roughly 28.9% of supply, was shielded on 10 September 2026 (KuCoin, Sep 2026). Zcash privacy is also optional: transparent t1 addresses are public, so use a shielded wallet. See shielded vs transparent.
Dash adopts Orchard
Dash announced earlier in 2026 that it would add Zcash's Orchard shielded pool to Dash Evolution, its platform chain, and the pools went live on 17 July 2026 (CoinAlertNews, 17 Jul 2026). It is optional, and funds can be unshielded back to ordinary Dash. Reports describe Dash's implementation as independent and not directly affected by Zcash's 2026 Orchard circuit bug; we could not confirm the technical details. Zcash itself has moved new shielded funds to its successor pool, Ironwood, after that bug (see the Orchard vulnerability).
Speed and payments
Dash's selling point has always been payments. InstantSend lets masternodes lock a transaction within seconds, and ChainLocks protect against chain reorganisations. Zcash's 75-second blocks are already faster than Bitcoin, and NU7 (planned around 5 November 2026, a delay is possible) targets 25-second blocks. For everyday small payments both are quick; Dash has the edge on instant finality today.
Supply and governance
Zcash has a 21 million cap and four-yearly halvings, and 20% of the block reward funds development until the 2028 halving (see Zcash supply). Dash has a cap of about 18.9 million, reached very slowly, and a treasury funded from block rewards. Masternode owners, who lock 1,000 DASH each, vote on which proposals get paid. Zcash moved part of its funding to a coinholder-controlled fund with NU6.1 on 24 November 2025.
Exchanges and regulation
Regulators and exchanges usually treat ZEC, XMR and DASH as one group. Kraken ended ZEC, XMR and DASH for clients in India (April 2026) and the UAE (June 2026) and excludes all three in Australia. South Korea's 2021 "dark coin" rule and India's January 2026 FIU-IND guidance named all three in reporting. In the EU, the AML Regulation bars licensed firms from handling anonymity-enhancing coins from 10 July 2027; whether optional-privacy coins like ZEC and DASH are caught is untested. Wallets
For Zcash, choose an Ironwood-ready wallet such as Zodl, Zingo!, Zkool or a multi-coin app like Edge or Unstoppable. Many multi-coin wallets that list both DASH and ZEC support only transparent ZEC; check our wallet matrix.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Dash if your priority is fast, cheap everyday payments with instant locks, and light, optional privacy is enough.
- Choose Zcash if privacy is the main reason you are choosing a coin. Its shielded pool hides amounts as well as parties, it has a much larger shielded user base, and its wallets are shielded by default.
Our verdict: for privacy, Zcash is clearly ahead. Dash's new Orchard pool is a sign of how influential Zcash's technology is, but it is young and lives on Dash's secondary chain.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dash a real privacy coin?
Dash offers optional CoinJoin mixing, which makes coins harder to trace but leaves amounts visible. Since July 2026 it also has an optional Orchard-based shielded pool on its Evolution chain.
Does Dash use Zcash technology?
Yes. Dash added Zcash's Orchard shielded pool design to its Evolution chain in July 2026.
Which is faster, Zcash or Dash?
Dash blocks come about every 2.5 minutes, but InstantSend locks payments in seconds. Zcash blocks come every 75 seconds, with 25-second blocks planned in NU7.
Are Zcash and Dash restricted in the same places?
Often, yes. Kraken dropped ZEC, XMR and DASH for India and the UAE in 2026, and South Korea's dark-coin rule covers all three.
