Zcash vs Monero: which privacy coin fits you in 2026?

Monero makes every transaction private by default, while Zcash offers zero-knowledge shielded transactions that you choose to use, and about 29% of ZEC was shielded in September 2026. Monero is the stricter privacy choice; Zcash is easier to buy on large regulated exchanges and has a fixed 21 million supply.

Zcash (ZEC) and Monero (XMR) are the two best-known privacy coins, but they make very different trade-offs. This page compares them as they stand in October 2026, after Zcash's Ironwood upgrade and while Monero's FCMP++ upgrade is still in testing.

Privacy model: default vs optional

Monero hides the sender, receiver and amount of every transaction. You cannot make a public Monero payment by accident, and every user adds cover for every other user.

Zcash has two kinds of address. Shielded addresses (Sapling zs1, and unified u1 addresses that include an Ironwood receiver) hide the sender, receiver, amount and memo using zero-knowledge proofs. Transparent t1 addresses work like Bitcoin and hide nothing. Our guide to shielded vs transparent ZEC explains the difference.

In practice this means:

  • A fully shielded Zcash payment is very strong: the proof reveals nothing about which earlier notes were spent, so the anonymity set is the whole pool rather than a handful of decoys.
  • But Zcash privacy depends on behaviour. Moving coins between transparent and shielded addresses, especially in round amounts and at predictable times, can link them. See is Zcash traceable?
  • Monero's ring signatures use a small set of decoys per input. Researchers have shown that this leaks some information in edge cases. Monero's planned FCMP++ upgrade (full-chain membership proofs) is meant to fix this, but as of October 2026 it is running on a test network with no mainnet date (CryptoTicker, 6 Oct 2026).

Modern Zcash wallets such as Zodl, Zingo! and Cake Wallet are shielded by default, which closes much of the practical gap with Monero, provided you use them.

The 2026 upgrades: Ironwood and FCMP++

Zcash had a difficult 2026. On 29 May a researcher found an under-constrained check in the Orchard shielded pool circuit that could, in theory, have allowed undetected counterfeiting since 2022. Orchard was halted by an emergency soft fork on 2 June 2026 and repaired by the NU6.2 hard fork on 3 June; no evidence of exploitation was found. On 28 July 2026 the NU6.3 upgrade launched a new shielded pool, Ironwood, and made Orchard withdraw-only through a public "turnstile" so that total supply can be audited (The Block, 28 Jul 2026). By 10 September about 88% of the old Orchard balance had moved over. Read more in the Orchard vulnerability explained and what Ironwood is.

Monero's big upgrade, FCMP++ together with the new Carrot address scheme, was forked onto a beta "stressnet" on 5 October 2026. Holders do not need to do anything, and the official roadmap gives no mainnet date (CryptoTicker, 6 Oct 2026).

One lesson from 2026: with fully hidden amounts, a counterfeiting bug is hard to detect. Zcash's turnstile design lets anyone check that no more value leaves a pool than entered it. Monero relies on its cryptography being correct in the same way.

Exchange access in 2026

This is where the two coins differ most for ordinary buyers.

  • Monero: Binance delisted XMR in February 2024. Kraken stopped XMR trading for EEA customers on 31 October 2024 and also restricts it in the UK and Canada. In October 2026 CryptoTicker named only a few centralised venues still offering XMR pairs, such as KuCoin, MEXC, Gate.io, TradeOgre and Kraken outside the EEA, none of them MiCA-authorised for German customers (CryptoTicker, Oct 2026).
  • Zcash: Binance kept ZEC and removed its "monitoring" tag on 9 July 2025. OKX relisted ZEC in November 2025. Kraken's regional restrictions list ZEC only for Australia, though Kraken also ended ZEC for clients in India (April 2026) and the UAE (June 2026). Coinbase lists ZEC but withdraws only to transparent addresses. A US spot Zcash ETF (ZCSH) has traded on NYSE Arca since 25 August 2026.

Some rules hit both coins: South Korea's 2021 "dark coin" rule, India's January 2026 FIU-IND guidance and UAE regulator bans. In the EU, the AML Regulation bars licensed crypto firms from handling anonymity-enhancing coins from 10 July 2027; whether optional-privacy ZEC is caught is untested (see the EU 2027 privacy-coin rules). Supply, mining and funding

Zcash copies Bitcoin's 21 million cap and four-yearly halvings; the next halving is expected around late November 2028 (block 4,406,400 under pre-NU7 rules; NU7 changes the block time but is designed to keep the schedule) (see Zcash halving). Until then 20% of each block reward funds development: 8% to Zcash Community Grants and 12% to a coinholder-controlled fund. Monero has no development tax and instead pays miners a small fixed reward forever, which keeps security funded after the main emission ended.

Zcash mining uses Equihash and is done with ASICs. Monero's RandomX is designed for ordinary CPUs, which keeps hobby mining possible.

Wallets

Both coins have good self-custody wallets. For Zcash, check that a wallet is Ironwood-ready: many multi-coin apps (Exodus, Trust Wallet, Trezor) handle only transparent ZEC. See the best Zcash wallets and our full wallet matrix. Cake Wallet supports both coins in one app. For hardware, Ledger and Keystone now support shielded ZEC (see Ledger vs Keystone).

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Monero if you want privacy on every payment without having to think about it, and you are comfortable buying through smaller venues, peer-to-peer or swaps where exchanges have dropped it.
  • Choose Zcash if you want strong zero-knowledge privacy plus a fixed supply, wide availability on regulated exchanges and the option to prove your history with a viewing key (for an accountant or tax office). Use a shielded-by-default wallet and move coins off the exchange into a shielded address.
  • Either way, privacy is a legitimate feature, not a way around the law: follow your country's tax and reporting rules (see Zcash taxes).

Our verdict: for most people who also want easy access to large exchanges, Zcash with a shielded wallet is the more practical choice in 2026. For maximum default privacy, Monero still leads until it is clear how many people keep their ZEC shielded.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zcash or Monero more private?

Monero is private by default for every transaction. A fully shielded Zcash transaction is very strong, often stronger per transaction, but only about 29% of ZEC was shielded in September 2026 and mixing transparent and shielded use can leak links.

Why can I buy Zcash on exchanges that dropped Monero?

Zcash transparent addresses let exchanges see deposits and withdrawals, and Zcash added the TEX address type for Binance. Many exchanges that delisted XMR, including Binance, kept ZEC.

Did the 2026 Orchard bug affect Monero?

No. It was a flaw in Zcash's Orchard circuit. Zcash fixed it in June 2026 and moved shielded funds to the new Ironwood pool from 28 July 2026. No evidence of exploitation was found.

Does Monero have a supply cap?

No. Monero has a permanent small tail emission per block. Zcash has a fixed cap of 21 million ZEC.

Can one wallet hold both ZEC and XMR?

Yes. Cake Wallet supports both, with shielded-by-default ZEC and Ironwood support. Check our wallet matrix for others.
