The legal situation in the United States
No US federal law bans owning or trading Zcash, and ZEC is listed by Coinbase, Kraken and Gemini. NYDFS approved ZEC trading on Gemini in 2018, and Grayscale's Zcash ETF (ZCSH) began trading on NYSE Arca on 25 Aug 2026. In January 2026 the Zcash Foundation said the SEC had closed its inquiry without recommending enforcement. Coinbase does not support sending ZEC to shielded addresses, while Gemini has supported shielded withdrawals since September 2020.
