The legal situation in Malaysia
Malaysia allows crypto trading only on SC-registered exchanges, which may list only SC-approved assets (15 as of mid-2025). A June 2025 SC consultation asked whether to impose extra requirements on assets designed to enhance anonymity, but no explicit ban was found, and we could not confirm ZEC on any registered exchange. Owning ZEC is legal.
Key facts
- 2019-01-31: The SC's digital asset exchange (DAX) framework began; six DAX operators were registered as of mid-2025.
- 2025-06-30: SC consultation paper PCP 3/2025 proposed easing listing rules and asked about extra requirements for 'digital assets intended to enhance user anonymity and transaction confidentiality'.
- The SC had approved 15 tradeable digital assets, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, as of mid-2025.
- Tax: Casual investing is generally untaxed; frequent trading may be business income.
